6.9 Things I Learned From My Dad

Today is my Dad’s 69th birthday! In honor of him, here are 6.9 things that I learned from Stew Essen. One for every decade he has graced this earth.
1. He taught me to love Jesus
Dad models the life of a true Christ follower 24/7.
2. He taught me to take care of my family
My Dad always saved the best parts of himself for his family. His provision and care for my Mom and two siblings was constant and still goes on to this day.
3. He taught me to give
There are not many people that love to give like Dad does. To those in need, to the church and continually to me at sports card shows when all I needed was one more David Robinson rookie card!
4. He taught me to steward my possessions
Dad is the total package of stewardship! He leads the way in managing his money, staying fit, having immaculate cars, a well manicured lawn and best of all, a loving marriage to my Mom for 44 years.
5. He taught me consistency
Dad does precisely what he says he will every time. Never late. Never absent. Amazing!
6. He taught me to love sports
Essen men watch sports! My Mom, my sister-in-law and my sweet wife all got to learn that very early on. ESPN is the spoken language when we are together. From Ranger and Maverick games at the old stadiums, to Duke basketball on TV, Dad has imparted his passion for sports to his boys. He even supports my love for the Green Bay Packers as long as they are not playing the Cowboys.
Dad also helped me run my first mile. He ran it with me in true Dad fashion wearing jeans and white leather shoes on the L. D. Bell track!
.9 He taught me how to look good
Anyone that has ever seen the two of us together immediately comments that I look just like my Dad. He quite a handsome fella!
To most he is Stew. To much of his family he is known as Posh. To me he will always just be Dad!
Happy Birthday Dad! I love you!

Dream Job Confession! The Blue Devils got handed just their first loss of the season last night. But each time I see Coach K and his assistants something inside me just leaps. I would love to work for him. Amazing leader!
